Twenty questions, answered with figures and sources. Where a question does not have a good published answer, the answer says so rather than filling the gap.

Longer treatments of most of these live in the guides section, and the scoring and running-cost method is on the methodology page.

Questions

How much does it cost to run a home sauna?

Between 7 and 15 cents for a 30-minute session, computed from the published wattages of 800 to 1,600 W at the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh. Four sessions a week works out to between about $1.27 and $2.54 a month. Sauna blankets cannot be costed at all, because not one publishes a wattage.

How much does a cold plunge chiller cost to run?

Between 3.5 and 22 cents an hour at full draw, from published wattages of 190 W to 1,200 W. At six hours a day that is between about $6 and $40 a month. A chiller cycles rather than running continuously, so we publish cost per hour at full draw and a continuous upper bound, and nothing in between, because the duty cycle is not something we measure.

Do you actually test these products?

No, and we say so on every page. We have no laboratory, no gaussmeter, no power meter and no owned units. What we do is read every product listing line by line on a stated date, record what each seller publishes and what they leave blank, compute the running cost of anything that publishes a wattage, and score the result on a published rubric.

What does the score out of 10 mean?

It is a disclosure score. It measures what the seller publishes and how well the product fits a small space, across six components: small-space fit, electrical fit, cost to run, key-number disclosure, spec completeness and warranty. It is not a test result and a low score does not mean a bad product - it means the seller published very little.

Why do all the sauna blankets score so low?

Because not one sauna blanket listing publishes a rated wattage, which means two of the six scoring components - electrical fit and cost to run, forty of the hundred points - have no input for any product in the category. In the portable sauna category, sold at similar prices to the same buyer, nine of twelve listings publish one.

Which sauna blankets are genuinely low EMF?

Nobody can answer that from published information. Of eight blankets we read, six market on EMF and two publish a figure, and neither figure is complete: one gives a number and a unit but no measurement distance, the other gives a number and a location but no unit. Everyone else prints a phrase with no number behind it.

Is a sauna blanket or a portable sauna better?

They do different things. A blanket heats you lying down with your head outside the heat, needs no floor space of its own, and sets up in under a minute. A tent heats the air around you sitting up, needs six to thirteen square feet while standing, and feels much more like a real sauna. If floor space is your constraint, the blanket wins by default.

Can you have a sauna in an apartment?

Yes. A portable sauna tent or a sauna blanket plugs into a normal outlet, needs no plumbing and no installation, and packs away. The three things to check are your circuit, whether a steam model's moisture is a problem in your building, and where it lives between sessions.

Will a portable sauna trip a breaker?

It can, if it shares a circuit with other loads. A standard 15 A US branch circuit carries about 1,440 W continuously and the largest steam generator in our roundup draws 1,600 W on its own. Finding out what shares your circuit takes ten minutes with a lamp and the breaker panel.

What temperature should a cold plunge be?

Fifty to fifty-nine Fahrenheit for a beginner, forty-five to fifty for regular use, and forty to forty-five once experienced. A 2025 network meta-analysis of immersion dosing ranked 10 to 15 minutes at 11 to 15 C - about 52 to 59 F - best for muscle soreness specifically.

How long should a cold plunge be?

One to three minutes for a beginner. The published dosing research used 10 to 15 minutes, which is far longer than most home plungers manage - worth knowing if you have been assuming ninety seconds is the target because that is what everyone online does.

Does cold plunging reduce inflammation?

The most recent pooled evidence found the opposite in the short term. A 2025 systematic review of 11 trials and 3,177 participants found significant increases in inflammation immediately after immersion and at one hour. Reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise is a different and better-supported finding, and the two get conflated constantly.

Is a chiller worth it compared with buying ice?

If you plunge three or more times a week, almost certainly. A chiller costs a few cents an hour and ice is a recurring purchase and a recurring errand. We publish a break-even formula rather than a figure, because bagged ice varies by hundreds of percent by source and the amount you need depends on your tap temperature and your tub's insulation.

What size chiller do I need?

Match the chiller's published gallon rating to your tub's measured volume, and size up if the tub lives somewhere warm. Undersizing is the expensive mistake: the unit runs continuously, never reaches setpoint, and costs more to run than a correctly sized larger one.

Why do some cold plunge tubs list two different capacities?

We do not know, and we report both rather than choosing. Two tubs on this site publish one capacity in the title and a different one in the specification table on the same page - 216 against 140, and 170 against 100. It matters because capacity is what sizes your chiller, so measure your own fill.

Were sauna blankets recalled?

Yes. On 23 October 2025 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recall 26-036, covering about 78,000 Lifepro Bioremedy infrared sauna blankets over an overheating hazard, following 65 overheating reports and 32 burn injuries. The notice names seven model numbers and covers only units with a gray control pad.

How is this site funded?

Affiliate commission. If you buy through a link here, the retailer pays us a percentage and you pay the same price you would have anyway. Amazon is currently the only retailer we hold a relationship with, and the pages where we earn nothing say so in their opening paragraph.

Does commission affect your rankings?

No, and there is no code path by which it could. Rank order comes from a published rubric whose inputs are figures the seller published; commission rate is not one of them. The most expensive and best-known sauna blanket on the market finishes last in our roundup.

Why do some products have no buy button?

Because we cannot build a link for them. Two brands people search for - Titan Wellness and VITAL+ - sell direct, and we have joined no affiliate program with either, so their pages carry no buy CTA and say so at the top. We will not build a tracking link for a program we have not joined.

Why does the price sometimes just say Check price?

Because prices render only from a live retailer data layer with a 48-hour freshness gate. When the layer has no fresh price, the button says Check price on Amazon rather than showing a number that has gone stale. We have never typed a price into page content and the content model is built so that we cannot.
