This is the category where the arithmetic bites
Everywhere else on this site the running cost is a rounding error you can ignore. Here it is a real number, and it is the reason this hub exists as its own category rather than as an accessory to the cold plunge roundup.
Horsepower is the wrong number
Horsepower describes the compressor motor. What you care about is how much heat the unit removes per hour, which is BTU per hour, and the relationship between the two varies with the refrigerant, the heat exchanger and the design. Two chillers both labeled 1 HP can have meaningfully different cooling capacity.
Exactly one chiller here publishes a BTU figure: 9,553 BTU per hour, alongside a 1,030 W rated power, a supply voltage, a temperature range and a stated cooling time from a stated starting temperature. That is what a complete specification looks like, and it is why that unit leads this page despite not being the cheapest to run.
For everything else, size by the published gallon rating and match it to your tub’s measured volume - not the number in the tub’s title, which on two tubs in our roundup disagrees with the number in the same listing’s spec table. The sizing page has the full table.
The published figure that cannot be right
Two other chillers here publish no wattage at all. Both score zero on the cost-to-run component, and the score says why. On a 1 HP unit that omission is conspicuous: the other 1 HP chiller on this page publishes 1,030 W, so the order of magnitude is not a mystery - we are simply not going to attribute one manufacturer’s figure to another.
Why we publish two numbers and nothing in between
For every chiller we give you cost per hour at full draw and the continuous-running upper bound. Nothing between them, because anything between them requires a duty cycle we do not measure.
A chiller is refrigeration. It draws its rated power while the compressor runs and almost nothing while it does not, and the ratio depends on ambient temperature, insulation, whether the lid is on, the setpoint and the volume. None of that is knowable from a listing.
Two brand-direct sellers we looked at do publish a single daily figure - roughly fifty cents to a dollar fifty a day - and both publish it without a wattage, a rate or a duty-cycle assumption, which makes it unfalsifiable rather than useful. That is discussed on the Titan page and the Vital page.

Filtration: the running cost that is not electricity
Every chiller here filters, and the type matters more than the presence. A reusable metal mesh catches hair and debris, costs nothing forever and takes thirty seconds under a tap. A 20-micron cartridge catches fine sediment as well and is a recurring purchase.
Over three years the difference between those two is larger than the difference in power draw between two similar chillers, and it never appears in a comparison because it is not electricity. Which units publish which is in chillers with filtration.
If your plunge is a bathtub
A bathtub has no ports, which rules out most of this category. The units that work with one either ship with a submersible pump - dropped in the water with two hoses over the rim - or cool directly in the water with no loop at all.
That route is the cheapest legitimate way to cold plunge at home: no tub to buy, no floor space claimed, and a drain already plumbed in. This is what a complete chiller spec sheet looks like: 1,030 W rated power, 9,553 BTU/h maximum cooling capacity, AC 110 to 120 V at 60 Hz, a 36 to 86 F range, and a stated cooling time with the starting temperature named. Every one of those is checkable, and together they let you predict what the unit will do in your room rather than hope.
The BTU figure is the one nobody else publishes and the one that actually lets you size a chiller properly. Horsepower is a compressor rating, not a cooling rating, and the relationship between the two varies by design. BTU per hour is the heat actually removed, which is the number that matters when you are deciding whether it can hold 132 gallons at 40 F in a warm garage.
At 1,030 W it is nineteen cents an hour at full draw - lower than both 1,200 W half-horse units here despite being a full horsepower, which is either better efficiency or a difference in how the figures were derived. The three-stage filtration is named by micron rating rather than described, and the ozone generator is a real sanitation method rather than a marketing word.
Buy it if
Someone who wants to size a chiller by arithmetic instead of by horsepower.
Skip it if
You want the smallest footprint. At 21 by 24 inches this is the largest unit here.

The submersible pump is what makes this the bathtub answer. A chiller normally needs a tub with inlet and outlet ports; a bathtub has neither. Dropping a pump into the water and running two hoses over the rim is inelegant and it works, and it is the cheapest route to a cold plunge for anyone who cannot give up floor space for a tub at all.
Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw, comfortably mid-range here. The 79-gallon rating is a good match for a standard bathtub, which holds somewhere between 40 and 80 gallons at plunge depth.
The reusable metal mesh filter rather than disposable cartridges is a genuine running-cost detail that gets ignored because it is not electricity. Cartridge filters are a recurring purchase; a rinsable metal screen is not, and over a year that difference is larger than the difference in power draw between two chillers.

Six of eight checklist items published, including the supply voltage at 110 V, which puts this among the best-documented listings in the category. Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw.
The specification is close to identical to the AS ColdPlunge unit elsewhere in this roundup - same 600 W, same 79-gallon rating, same 42 F floor, same 11.8 by 14.9 by 12.6 inch case - which again suggests a shared production line and a different label. Where two listings publish the same numbers, buy on price and on which kit is more complete.
The metal mesh filter is the same argument as before and it is a good one: no cartridges to replace, rinse it and put it back. Over three years that is a larger sum than most people expect.

Every chiller listing in this category says 'quiet' and exactly one publishes a figure. Thirty to forty decibels is genuinely quiet - roughly a library, well under a household refrigerator - and whether or not the figure is generous, publishing a number you can be held to is a different act from printing an adjective.
This matters more than it sounds in a small space. A chiller sitting next to a balcony door in a one-bedroom apartment runs for hours, often overnight, and a unit that turns out to be as loud as a window air conditioner is one you stop using.
The published range of 41 to 55 F is a range rather than a floor, which is a slightly weaker claim than the single-figure floors elsewhere. At 1,200 W and a 105-gallon rating it is otherwise a conventional half-horse unit: twenty-two cents an hour at full draw, same as the PlungeFit.
Buy it if
Anyone putting a chiller in or next to a room they sleep in.

Direct-in-water cooling removes the entire plumbing problem: no ports, no hoses, no pump priming, no leak points. For a renter, that also removes the part of a cold plunge setup most likely to put water on a floor you do not own.
It costs you in power. At 1,200 W this is twenty-two cents an hour at full draw and, in the theoretical case of running continuously for a month, about a hundred and sixty dollars. It will not run continuously - it cycles to hold a setpoint like any refrigeration - but among the chillers here it is at the expensive end and the 280 W Pod Company unit is at the other.
The 150-gallon rating and the 39 F floor are both genuine capability. If you have a large tub and you want it properly cold rather than merely cool, this is a reasonable pairing, and the WiFi scheduling means you can have it chill overnight on a cheaper tariff if your utility has one.

A renter who wants no plumbing and is prepared to pay for it in electricity.

Running cost is your first concern. This is the highest published draw here.

Two hundred and eighty watts is the number that decides this category. At the current US residential average it costs about five cents an hour at full draw, and even running continuously for a month - which no chiller does - the absolute ceiling is around thirty-eight dollars. The 1,200 W units in this roundup are four times that.
The listing's own comparison is a good one: about the same as a home freezer. That is a useful mental model, because a chiller works the same way and cycles the same way. It draws its rated power while the compressor is running and almost nothing while it is not, and how often it runs depends on your lid discipline, your room temperature and how well your tub is insulated.
The published floor is 41 F, which is warmer than the 37 to 39 F claimed by the bigger units. For most people that is irrelevant - the commonly recommended starting band is 50 to 59 F and experienced plungers usually settle around 45 to 50 F - but if you specifically want to get below 40, this will not do it.

Anyone whose plunge is a daily habit rather than an occasional event, where running cost compounds.

The published wattage on this listing is 190 W, identical to the 0.25 HP model from the same brand. A half-horsepower compressor moving nearly twice the heat cannot draw the same power as a quarter-horsepower one. One of those two figures is wrong, and there is no way to tell which from the outside.
We report it as published and score it as published, because the alternative is substituting our own estimate for the manufacturer's number, and an estimate dressed as a spec is exactly what this site exists not to do. But you should treat the running-cost figure for this unit as unreliable in a way the others are not, and that is worth more to you than a confident number would be.
The rest is the same well-proven design as the quarter-horse: titanium evaporator, digital setpoint, a boost mode for pulling temperature down faster, and a published one-year manufacturer warranty, which is one of only two real warranty terms in this category.
Buy it if
Someone with a 90 to 172 gallon tub who wants the titanium design at the larger size.
Skip it if
You are budgeting on the published wattage. It is almost certainly a copy of the smaller unit's figure.

This is an aquarium and hydroponics chiller, and that is the case for it rather than against. Aquarium chillers have been made to the same job for decades, they are expected to run unattended for years, and the titanium evaporator exists because someone else's fish were going to be swimming in the water. That is a longer track record than the cold-plunge-specific category has existed for.
At 190 W it is the second-cheapest to run here, about three and a half cents an hour at full draw. The rated volume range of 40 to 92 gallons is the constraint - this is not enough compressor for a 216-gallon tub, and it will run continuously trying.
The one thing it does not publish is a floor temperature. Aquarium chillers are specified by cooling capacity and volume rather than by a target temperature, which is a different but perfectly reasonable convention, and it means you are sizing by gallons instead of by degrees. Match it to a tub under 92 gallons and it is the right tool.
Buy it if
Someone with a tub under 92 gallons who wants a design with a long service history.
Skip it if
Your tub is over 92 gallons, or you want a published temperature floor. Neither fits.
