Two completely different cost shapes

Ice is zero up front and a recurring cost and errand every session. A chiller is a few hundred dollars up front and 3.5 to 22 cents an hour to run. If you plunge three or more times a week, the chiller usually wins inside a year - and it wins on convenience long before it wins on money.

What we can compute, and what we will not

The chiller side is arithmetic. Published wattages across the chiller roundup run from 190 W to 1,200 W. At 18.34 cents per kWh:

We are not going to publish a national ice price, because there is not one worth publishing. Bagged ice varies by several hundred percent between a supermarket, a convenience store and a bulk supplier, and the amount you need depends on your tap temperature, your room and your tub’s insulation - none of which we can know. Work your own break-even with the formula below rather than trusting a figure someone else invented.

Your own break-even, in one line

Put your real numbers in. If ice costs you four dollars a session and you plunge four times a week, that is about sixty-nine dollars a month. Against a 280 W chiller running six hours a day at nine dollars and change, you are saving roughly sixty a month, and a four-hundred dollar chiller pays for itself in about seven.

Change any of those inputs and the answer changes. That is the point of giving you the formula instead of the answer.

The reasons a chiller wins that have nothing to do with money

  • Consistency. The same temperature every session, set on a display, is a different practice from guessing at how much ice to add. If you care about progression, it is the only way to know what you are progressing from.
  • No errand. The failure mode of an ice setup is not cost, it is a Tuesday evening when you have not been to the shop. Habits die of friction.
  • Filtration comes with it. Every chiller in our roundup includes some filtration. An ice setup has the same fouling problem and none of the equipment - see cold plunge maintenance.
  • It holds between sessions. With a lid on a chilled tub, tomorrow is a top-up rather than a fresh start.

Where ice still wins

Two situations, and both are real. If you are not yet sure you will keep this up, ice in a bathtub costs nothing to try and answers the question in a week. And if you plunge occasionally rather than habitually - once a week, after a long run - a chiller running to hold temperature for six days to serve one session is genuinely worse economics as well as worse sense.

The middle path a lot of people end up on: an insulated tub with a clamped lid, ice for the first few months, and a chiller added once the habit is established. Buy the tub with real ports so that upgrade does not mean buying the tub twice - the inflatable roundup covers which ones have them.

Two hundred and eighty watts is the number that decides this category. At the current US residential average it costs about five cents an hour at full draw, and even running continuously for a month - which no chiller does - the absolute ceiling is around thirty-eight dollars. The 1,200 W units in this roundup are four times that.

The listing's own comparison is a good one: about the same as a home freezer. That is a useful mental model, because a chiller works the same way and cycles the same way. It draws its rated power while the compressor is running and almost nothing while it is not, and how often it runs depends on your lid discipline, your room temperature and how well your tub is insulated.

The published floor is 41 F, which is warmer than the 37 to 39 F claimed by the bigger units. For most people that is irrelevant - the commonly recommended starting band is 50 to 59 F and experienced plungers usually settle around 45 to 50 F - but if you specifically want to get below 40, this will not do it.

Anyone whose plunge is a daily habit rather than an occasional event, where running cost compounds.

The submersible pump is what makes this the bathtub answer. A chiller normally needs a tub with inlet and outlet ports; a bathtub has neither. Dropping a pump into the water and running two hoses over the rim is inelegant and it works, and it is the cheapest route to a cold plunge for anyone who cannot give up floor space for a tub at all.

Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw, comfortably mid-range here. The 79-gallon rating is a good match for a standard bathtub, which holds somewhere between 40 and 80 gallons at plunge depth.

The reusable metal mesh filter rather than disposable cartridges is a genuine running-cost detail that gets ignored because it is not electricity. Cartridge filters are a recurring purchase; a rinsable metal screen is not, and over a year that difference is larger than the difference in power draw between two chillers.

Chillers come with filtration built in. Ice does not, which leaves ice-only plungers with the same water quality problem and none of the equipment, and it is why a standalone filter belongs in this category rather than being an afterthought.

Six hundred gallons per hour turns over a 100-gallon tub six times an hour, which is well above what a plunge needs, and the UV stage handles what a mechanical filter cannot. Running it for an hour after each session is enough to keep water clear for weeks.

The wattage is not published, so we cannot give you a running cost, but a pump in this class is a small load - tens of watts rather than hundreds - and it runs for an hour rather than continuously.

Questions people actually ask

Is a cold plunge chiller worth it compared to ice?

If you plunge three or more times a week, almost certainly. A chiller's running cost is a few cents an hour and ice is a recurring purchase and a recurring errand. The break-even depends entirely on what ice costs where you live, but at typical bagged-ice prices and a daily plunge, most setups pay back the chiller within a year.

How much ice do you need for a cold plunge?

It depends on your starting water temperature, your tub's insulation and how cold you want to get. There is no universal figure and anyone quoting one without those inputs is guessing. What is predictable is the direction: warmer tap water, a warmer room and a poorly insulated tub all multiply it, which is why insulation and a clamped lid matter more to your ice bill than anything else you can buy.

Can you cold plunge without a chiller?

Yes. Cold tap water in winter is under 60 F in much of the US, which is already within the beginner band, and ice takes it lower. A chiller is a convenience and a consistency purchase, not a requirement - what it buys you is the same temperature every day without an errand.
