The Active Aqua 0.5 HP unit publishes the same 190 W as its own 1/4 HP model. A half-horsepower compressor moving nearly twice the heat cannot draw the same power as a quarter-horsepower one, so one of those two published figures is wrong. We report what is published rather than substituting our own estimate, and we flag it here so you do not size or budget on it.

Why horsepower is the wrong number

Horsepower describes the compressor motor. What you actually care about is how much heat the unit removes per hour, which is BTU per hour, and the relationship between the two varies with the refrigerant, the heat exchanger and the design. Two 1 HP chillers can have meaningfully different cooling capacities.

Exactly one chiller in our roundup publishes a BTU figure: 9,553 BTU per hour on the TURBRO 1 HP unit, alongside a 1,030 W rated power, a supply voltage and a stated cooling time from a stated starting temperature. That is what a complete chiller specification looks like, and it is why that unit tops the chiller roundup despite not being the cheapest to run.

The four things that change your real requirement

  1. Volume, measured rather than published. Two tubs on this site publish two different capacities on the same page. Fill yours once through a metered hose and use that number.
  2. Ambient temperature. A chiller in a 95 F garage in August is fighting a much larger heat gradient than one in a 65 F basement. Size up if the tub lives somewhere hot.
  3. Insulation and the lid. Most heat enters through the open water surface. A clamped insulated lid does more for your chiller’s workload than any other single factor, which is why we treat lids as a sizing input rather than an accessory.
  4. How cold you actually want it. Holding 50 F is a substantially easier job than holding 39 F, and several units in this category publish floors of 41 or 42 F that put the colder end out of reach regardless of sizing.

What undersizing actually costs

It is worth being concrete, because the intuition runs backwards. People assume a small chiller on a big tub simply takes longer. What actually happens is that it never gets there, and it draws its full rated power the entire time trying.

So a 600 W unit running twenty-four hours a day against a tub it cannot hold costs $80 a month and delivers water at the wrong temperature. A correctly sized 1,030 W unit cycling six hours a day costs $34 and delivers the temperature you set. The bigger chiller is cheaper to run, which is the opposite of what the wattage suggests.

A rule of thumb, honestly labeled as one

Pick the chiller whose published gallon rating is at or above your measured volume. If the tub lives outdoors or in an unconditioned space, go one size up. If it lives indoors with a lid and you are targeting 50 F rather than 40 F, the rating is generous and you can trust it.

That is a rule of thumb, not a calculation, and we are labeling it as one because the calculation would need a BTU figure that eight of nine manufacturers do not publish.

The submersible pump is what makes this the bathtub answer. A chiller normally needs a tub with inlet and outlet ports; a bathtub has neither. Dropping a pump into the water and running two hoses over the rim is inelegant and it works, and it is the cheapest route to a cold plunge for anyone who cannot give up floor space for a tub at all.

Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw, comfortably mid-range here. The 79-gallon rating is a good match for a standard bathtub, which holds somewhere between 40 and 80 gallons at plunge depth.

The reusable metal mesh filter rather than disposable cartridges is a genuine running-cost detail that gets ignored because it is not electricity. Cartridge filters are a recurring purchase; a rinsable metal screen is not, and over a year that difference is larger than the difference in power draw between two chillers.

Every chiller listing in this category says 'quiet' and exactly one publishes a figure. Thirty to forty decibels is genuinely quiet - roughly a library, well under a household refrigerator - and whether or not the figure is generous, publishing a number you can be held to is a different act from printing an adjective.

This matters more than it sounds in a small space. A chiller sitting next to a balcony door in a one-bedroom apartment runs for hours, often overnight, and a unit that turns out to be as loud as a window air conditioner is one you stop using.

The published range of 41 to 55 F is a range rather than a floor, which is a slightly weaker claim than the single-figure floors elsewhere. At 1,200 W and a 105-gallon rating it is otherwise a conventional half-horse unit: twenty-two cents an hour at full draw, same as the PlungeFit.

Sizing a chiller under its tub is the most common expensive mistake in this category: an undersized unit runs continuously, never reaches setpoint, and costs more in electricity than the right one would.
