Why a bathtub needs a specific kind of chiller
This matters more than it sounds, because using a bathtub is the cheapest legitimate way to cold plunge at home. No tub to buy, no floor space claimed, nothing a landlord can object to, and a drain already plumbed in. The two approaches, and what they cost
Twice the draw for the same job is a real difference over a year, and it buys you the removal of every hose, fitting and priming step. In a bathroom you own, the hose version is the rational buy. In one you rent, where a leak is somebody else’s ceiling, the drop-in has an argument that is not really about electricity.
Sizing: a bathtub is smaller than you think

- Is the submersible pump actually included? Several listings mention one in the accessory list and several do not. Without it, a hose-based chiller cannot use a bathtub at all.
- Reusable filter or cartridges? Two units here use a rinsable metal mesh and one uses a 20-micron cartridge. Over three years that is a larger cost difference than the electricity.
- Where will the box live? These are 12 to 15 inches on a side and 35 to 53 pounds. In a small bathroom, the physical footprint beside the tub is the constraint people forget until it arrives.
- Noise. Only one chiller in the full roundup publishes a decibel figure. If the unit lives in a bathroom adjoining a bedroom, that absence matters.
