What a sauna blanket costs to run, and why nobody publishes the number

Eight blankets. Eight blank wattage fields. Here is how far you can get with arithmetic anyway, and where the honest answer runs out.

How much does a sauna blanket cost to run?

Nobody can give you an exact figure, because not one sauna blanket listing we read publishes a rated wattage. What can be stated honestly is a bound. A 120 V household circuit carries about 1,440 W continuously, so no plug-in blanket exceeds that. At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 45-minute session costs at most about 19 cents. A more typical 900 W design costs about 12 cents.

The finding first, because it is the story

We read eight sauna blanket listings on 7 September 2026 for the roundup on this site - the title, every feature bullet and the full specification table on each. Across all eight, the number of published wattage figures was zero.

That is not normal for a heating appliance, and it is not the norm elsewhere on this site. In the portable sauna category, sold to the same buyer at similar prices, nine of twelve listings publish a wattage, usually in the same bullet as the heat-up time. Chillers publish it too. It is specifically sauna blankets that do not.

One blanket publishes a supply voltage - “Plug in at 110v” - and that is the entire electrical disclosure available in the category. Voltage without current or power does not get you to a cost, but it does confirm the thing a renter needs confirmed, which is that it runs off a normal wall outlet.

What you can compute anyway

The absence of a published figure does not leave you with nothing, because physics and the National Electrical Code do some of the work. A standard US branch circuit is 15 amps, and for a load that runs continuously it is derated to 80 percent - 12 amps, or 1,440 W at 120 V. Every blanket in this category is sold as a plug-in appliance for a normal outlet, so that is the ceiling.

Computed at 18.34 cents per kWh, the US Total residential average for June 2026 (EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, retrieved 2026-09-07). These are maximums assuming continuous draw - a resistive element cycles once it reaches setpoint, so the real figure is lower.

Why the range is narrow enough to act on

The interesting thing about that table is how little the answer moves. Across the entire plausible range - from a modest 600 W blanket to one at the physical limit of what a wall outlet will carry - the monthly cost of four sessions a week goes from about a dollar forty to about three thirty-five.

So the honest conclusion is a boring one: running cost is not a reason to pick one sauna blanket over another. It is a rounding error against a purchase price between $70 and $450. The reason we care about the missing wattage is not the money. It is what an unpublished electrical rating tells you about how much else the seller has decided you do not need to know.

Where the honest answer runs out

Three things this page deliberately does not tell you, because we would have to make them up:

  • What any specific blanket actually draws. We could infer from the heated area and the temperature range. That would be an estimate wearing a specification’s clothes, and this site does not do that.
  • The duty cycle. A resistive element runs at full power until setpoint, then cycles. What fraction of a session it spends energized depends on the room, the setting and how well the shell holds heat. We do not measure it, so every figure above is labeled as a maximum.
  • Your rate. The national average hides an enormous spread between states. Substitute your own figure into the formula above - it is one multiplication.

Six of the eight items on our spec checklist are published here, which is the highest count of any blanket we looked at. The dimensions are given twice - folded for use and opened flat - which is genuinely useful, because a blanket you have to lie inside is a different piece of furniture from a blanket you lay out on a bed, and most sellers publish only one of the two numbers.

The warranty is the outlier. A lifetime term, conditional on registering the product, is the longest published commitment in this roundup by a wide margin, and it is the sort of claim a seller does not make lightly on a heating appliance. It is worth reading as a statement about expected failure rate rather than as a promise you will ever need to use.

What is still missing is the number that matters most for cost: rated watts. Nobody in this category publishes it, and Lunix is no exception, so the electrical-fit and cost-to-run components of the score have nothing to work with. The EMF language is the same phrase everyone uses - 'Low EMF' with no measurement, no unit and no distance - which earns partial credit for saying something and no credit for saying anything checkable.

Buy it if

Someone who wants the most published information in the category and values a long warranty term over a brand name.

Five of eight checklist items published, which puts this near the top of the category on completeness, and the temperature range is given as a real span rather than as a count of heat levels. Nine settings tells you nothing; 95 F to 176 F tells you whether the low end is usable for a first session.

The listing also carries a warm-up disclosure we did not see elsewhere: five to ten minutes to warm and ten to fifteen more to reach full operating temperature. That is a slow start by the standards of the marketing in this category, and publishing it anyway is a point in the seller's favor. It also matters for cost, because a slow warm-up means more of your session is spent at full draw.

At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 45-minute session at 1,400 W costs at most about 19 cents, and at 900 W about 12 cents.

Does a sauna blanket use a lot of electricity?

No. Even at the highest load a 120 V outlet can carry continuously, a 45-minute session is under 20 cents at the US residential average rate. Four sessions a week works out to roughly three to four dollars a month. The purchase price dominates the running cost by a very large margin.

Why don't sauna blanket makers publish wattage?

We do not know, and we are not going to guess at a motive. What we can report is the fact: across the eight blanket listings in our roundup, read on 7 September 2026, none published a rated power figure, while almost every portable sauna listing in the same price range did.
