Nine of twelve listings publish a wattage, which is enough to cost the whole category properly. Here is every figure and the arithmetic behind it.

How much does a portable sauna cost to run?
Every published wattage in the category, costed
Nine of the twelve portable saunas in our roundup publish a rated wattage. That is a rate of disclosure we did not find anywhere else on this site’s heat products - the sauna blanket category publishes zero - and it is what makes this table possible.
The arithmetic, so you can redo it
energy per session (kWh) = watts x (minutes / 60) / 1000
cost per session ($) = energy per session x rate per kWh
cost per month ($) = cost per session x sessions per week x 4.33Worked example, the 1,050 W ZONEMEL infrared over 30 minutes: 1050 x 0.5 / 1000 = 0.525 kWh. At $0.1834 per kWh that is $0.096, or about ten cents. Four sessions a week: 0.096 x 4 x 4.33 = $1.67 a month.
Why these are maximums, not measurements
There is one wrinkle worth naming. A steam generator boils water for the entire session rather than reaching a setpoint and idling, so it sits closer to its rated draw than an infrared panel does. That means the real gap between a 900 W steam tent and a 1,050 W infrared one is probably smaller than the table implies, and possibly reversed. We do not measure duty cycle, so that stays as a caveat here rather than becoming a number.
The rate you should actually use
Every figure above uses 18.34 cents per kWh, the US Total residential average for June 2026 from the EIA’s Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A. That figure was 17.47 cents a year earlier.
It is a national average and it conceals an enormous spread. Residential rates in the cheapest states are roughly a third of those in the most expensive. Take the number off your own bill and put it into the formula above; it is one multiplication and it will be more accurate than anything a national figure can tell you.

Eight hundred watts is the number that makes this interesting. It is a third less than the 1,200 W steamers that dominate the category, it draws about 6.7 amps on a 120 V circuit, and it is comfortably inside what a shared bedroom outlet will carry without an argument. For a renter running a sauna in a room that also has a television and a lamp on the same circuit, that is the whole decision.
The trade-off is honest and predictable: less steam power means a slower fill and a lower ceiling, and this listing does not publish a maximum temperature, which is the one checklist item you would most want alongside the wattage. A steam tent's temperature depends on room temperature and how well the fabric seals anyway, so a published maximum is less load-bearing here than it is on an infrared unit - but the absence still costs it a point.
This is a steam sauna, not an infrared one. Steam works on you from the outside in and gets you wet; infrared warms you more slowly and leaves you dry. Neither is better, and if you have not used both, that distinction will change your experience far more than any spec on this page.

A renter on a shared circuit who wants the lowest electrical load and the lowest running cost in the category.

Six of eight checklist items published, including the two that matter most for this site's purposes: 900 watts and a 113 F ceiling. That is 7.5 amps, well inside a standard outlet, and it costs about eight cents for a thirty-minute session at the national average rate.
The 113 F maximum is worth pausing on, because it is much lower than the 140 F figures quoted by infrared units in this roundup and that is not a defect. Steam at 113 F and 100 percent humidity is a harder environment to sit in than dry air at 140 F. Comparing the two numbers directly is the most common mistake buyers make in this category, and it is why our comparison of infrared and steam exists.
At 9.2 pounds it is the lightest full-size unit here by a clear margin, and the listing gives a real folding procedure rather than a claim of portability. If the sauna lives in a closet between sessions, weight is not a spec, it is the thing that decides whether you actually use it.

Someone in a small apartment who has to put the sauna away after every session.
Skip it if
You want dry infrared heat, or you want a higher temperature ceiling.

One thousand watts is 8.3 amps and sits right on our threshold: fine on a shared outlet, better on its own. A thirty-minute session costs about nine cents at the national average rate, which is second-cheapest here behind the 800 W Durasage.
The 140 F ceiling is high for a steam unit - most of this category tops out between 113 F and 130 F - and combined with 1,000 W and a 2.6 L reservoir it is a well-matched set of numbers rather than a headline figure with nothing behind it.
The '15s fast heating' claim in the title refers to the element, not the tent. Nothing fills a 31-inch cube with steam in fifteen seconds. Read it as how quickly the boiler starts producing rather than how quickly you can get in.

A first sauna where cost per session and a small footprint both matter.
Skip it if
You want a timer range or a warranty published. Neither is.

At 1,050 W this draws about 8.8 amps, which a standard 15 A outlet carries without complaint even with something else plugged in. It is the highest-powered infrared unit here that still sits comfortably under the 1,000 W line where we start recommending the outlet be left to itself, and a thirty-minute session works out to roughly ten cents at the national average rate.
The heated foot pad is the detail worth knowing about. Infrared tents heat what the panels face, and in a seated tent that means your back and sides get the heat while your feet sit on ambient floor. A separate foot element is the direct fix and not every unit in this price range includes one.
The footprint is the smallest of any sit-in sauna in this roundup: 27.6 by 31.5 inches deployed, about six square feet, which is roughly the area of a single armchair. That is what makes an infrared tent viable in a one-bedroom apartment at all.

Questions people actually ask
How much electricity does a portable sauna use?
Between 0.40 and 0.80 kWh for a 30-minute session, depending on the model, based on published wattages of 800 to 1,600 W. At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh that is 7 to 15 cents per session, or between about $1.27 and $2.54 a month at four sessions a week.
Does a home sauna raise your electricity bill?
Barely. Four 30-minute sessions a week on a 1,050 W unit adds about $1.67 a month at the US residential average rate. For comparison, a typical US household uses several hundred kWh a month, so a portable sauna is a rounding error on the bill.
How do you calculate sauna running cost?
Energy per session in kilowatt-hours equals rated watts times session hours divided by 1,000. Multiply that by your electricity rate per kWh. For 1,050 W over 30 minutes: 1,050 x 0.5 / 1,000 = 0.525 kWh, times 18.34 cents = about 10 cents. Substitute your own rate from your bill for a local figure.
Do infrared saunas cost less to run than steam saunas?
Probably, but not because of the rated wattage - the ranges overlap almost completely. Infrared panels reach a setpoint and cycle, while a steam generator boils water continuously through the session, so real consumption likely favors infrared. We do not measure duty cycle, so we publish the rated-power figures as maximums and label the rest as a caveat rather than a number.
