What your circuit can actually carry
The most useful ten minutes you can spend before buying any of this, and the arithmetic that tells you which units are realistic.

The number to hold on to
That figure is per circuit, not per outlet. A single 15 A breaker typically feeds several outlets around a room, and everything plugged into any of them shares the same 1,440 W. That is the thing people get wrong: they check that the sauna fits, and forget the television, the lamp and the phone charger on the same run.
Ten minutes that will save you a returned appliance
- Plug a lamp into the outlet where the sauna or chiller will go and switch it on.
- Go to the breaker panel and turn breakers off one at a time until the lamp goes out.
- Leave that breaker off. Label it.
- Walk the room with the lamp and try every other outlet. Every dead one is on the same circuit as your sauna.
- Add up what is normally plugged into all of them.
Ten minutes, no tools, no electrician. In an older building the result is often surprising - a single circuit covering a bedroom and half a hallway is common.
What fits
Why chillers are a different problem
A sauna runs for thirty minutes while you are in the room and paying attention. A chiller runs unattended, often overnight, and cycles on and off on its own schedule.
That changes the risk. A tripped breaker during a sauna session is an inconvenience. A tripped breaker at 2 a.m. means you find out in the morning that your plunge is at room temperature and your fridge, if it is on the same circuit, has been off for six hours.
Chiller draws in our roundup run from 190 W to 1,200 W. Even the largest is comfortably inside a standard circuit on its own. The question is what shares it.
Extension cords, and why the manufacturers are right
Most listings tell you not to use one, and it is not boilerplate. A resistive heater drawing 10 to 13 amps through a thin or long extension lead loses voltage along the cord, which the appliance compensates for by drawing more current, which heats the cord further. The cord is almost always the weakest component in the chain.
If the outlet is not where you want the sauna, move the sauna. Every product on this site is portable; that is the entire premise.
When you would actually need an electrician
You do not, for anything in our roundups. Every product on this site is a plug-in 120 V appliance. A dedicated 20 A circuit becomes relevant only if you want the 1,600 W steam generator and your existing circuit is already loaded, and in a rental that is a landlord conversation and a permit, not an afternoon.
The simpler answer is almost always to buy the 900 W unit instead. It costs less, it costs less to run, and the difference in what it delivers is smaller than the difference in what it demands - which is set out with figures in what a portable sauna costs to run.

Eight hundred watts is the number that makes this interesting. It is a third less than the 1,200 W steamers that dominate the category, it draws about 6.7 amps on a 120 V circuit, and it is comfortably inside what a shared bedroom outlet will carry without an argument. For a renter running a sauna in a room that also has a television and a lamp on the same circuit, that is the whole decision.
The trade-off is honest and predictable: less steam power means a slower fill and a lower ceiling, and this listing does not publish a maximum temperature, which is the one checklist item you would most want alongside the wattage. A steam tent's temperature depends on room temperature and how well the fabric seals anyway, so a published maximum is less load-bearing here than it is on an infrared unit - but the absence still costs it a point.
This is a steam sauna, not an infrared one. Steam works on you from the outside in and gets you wet; infrared warms you more slowly and leaves you dry. Neither is better, and if you have not used both, that distinction will change your experience far more than any spec on this page.

Six of eight checklist items published, including the two that matter most for this site's purposes: 900 watts and a 113 F ceiling. That is 7.5 amps, well inside a standard outlet, and it costs about eight cents for a thirty-minute session at the national average rate.
The 113 F maximum is worth pausing on, because it is much lower than the 140 F figures quoted by infrared units in this roundup and that is not a defect. Steam at 113 F and 100 percent humidity is a harder environment to sit in than dry air at 140 F. Comparing the two numbers directly is the most common mistake buyers make in this category, and it is why our comparison of infrared and steam exists.
At 9.2 pounds it is the lightest full-size unit here by a clear margin, and the listing gives a real folding procedure rather than a claim of portability. If the sauna lives in a closet between sessions, weight is not a spec, it is the thing that decides whether you actually use it.

It is the highest-powered infrared unit here that still sits comfortably under the 1,000 W line where we start recommending the outlet be left to itself, and a thirty-minute session works out to roughly ten cents at the national average rate.
The heated foot pad is the detail worth knowing about. Infrared tents heat what the panels face, and in a seated tent that means your back and sides get the heat while your feet sit on ambient floor. A separate foot element is the direct fix and not every unit in this price range includes one.
The footprint is the smallest of any sit-in sauna in this roundup: 27.6 by 31.5 inches deployed, about six square feet, which is roughly the area of a single armchair. That is what makes an infrared tent viable in a one-bedroom apartment at all.

A chiller cycles. It draws its rated power while the compressor runs and almost nothing while it does not, and how often it runs depends on ambient temperature, insulation, lid use and setpoint. Two hundred and eighty watts is the number that decides this category. At the current US residential average it costs about five cents an hour at full draw, and even running continuously for a month - which no chiller does - the absolute ceiling is around thirty-eight dollars. The 1,200 W units in this roundup are four times that.
The listing's own comparison is a good one: about the same as a home freezer. That is a useful mental model, because a chiller works the same way and cycles the same way. It draws its rated power while the compressor is running and almost nothing while it is not, and how often it runs depends on your lid discipline, your room temperature and how well your tub is insulated.
The published floor is 41 F, which is warmer than the 37 to 39 F claimed by the bigger units. For most people that is irrelevant - the commonly recommended starting band is 50 to 59 F and experienced plungers usually settle around 45 to 50 F - but if you specifically want to get below 40, this will not do it.
Buy it if
Anyone whose plunge is a daily habit rather than an occasional event, where running cost compounds.

Questions people actually ask
Does a portable sauna need a dedicated circuit?
Not usually, but the largest ones want the outlet to themselves. A standard 15 A US branch circuit carries about 1,440 W continuously, and portable saunas in our roundup publish draws from 800 to 1,600 W. Anything at or above about 1,400 W should have the circuit to itself.
How many watts can a normal outlet handle?
A 15 A, 120 V circuit can supply 1,800 W momentarily, but for a load running longer than three hours the code derating is 80 percent, which is 12 A or 1,440 W. A 20 A circuit gives you 1,920 W on the same basis. Those are per circuit, not per outlet - several outlets usually share one.
How do I find out what is on my circuit?
Plug a lamp into the outlet you plan to use, then switch breakers off one at a time until the lamp goes out. That breaker is your circuit. Now walk the room with the lamp and find every other outlet that is also dead - those all share the same 1,440 W with your sauna.
Can you run a sauna on an extension cord?
It is a bad idea and most manufacturers say so. A high-draw resistive heater on a thin or long extension lead means voltage drop and a warm cord, and the cord is usually the weakest link in the whole chain. If the outlet is not where you need it, move the sauna rather than extending the cord.
