How to use a portable sauna
Assembly, session length, and the part every listing skips: what you do with a wet tent when you are finished.

Setting one up
- Assemble the frame and pull the shell over it. First time takes about ten minutes; after that, one to two.
- Put the chair inside before you zip anything.
- Fill the steam generator to its line - 2 to 4 liters depending on the model.
- Connect the hose to the tent’s inlet and check it is seated properly.
- Run it for 5 to 10 minutes to preheat before you get in.
- Get in, put your head through the neck opening, set the timer for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Keep water within reach outside the tent.
- Afterwards: empty the reservoir, open every zip, and dry it fully before folding.
The neck opening, and why it changes the session
Almost every tent in this category is designed so your head sits outside the heat, through a drawstring opening at the top. That is not a compromise - it is the reason a fabric tent at 130 F is tolerable for half an hour when a commercial sauna at the same temperature with your head inside would not be.
It also means the sensation is different from a real sauna in a specific way: your body is hot and the air you breathe is not. Some people find that easier and some find it strange. It is worth knowing before your first session so you are not waiting for something that is not going to happen.
Session length
Start at 10 to 15 minutes. Work up to 20 to 30. Every unit in our roundup has a timer running to at least 60 minutes and one goes to 99, and none of those numbers is a recommendation - they are the limits of the control.
Steam is harder work than the thermometer suggests, for the reason set out in infrared versus steam: at full humidity your sweat cannot evaporate, so your body loses its main cooling mechanism. If you are used to a dry sauna at 180 F, a steam tent at 120 F will still surprise you.
The humidity question in a small room
If that sounds like a problem you would rather not manage, an infrared unit produces no moisture at all, and a sauna blanket produces none either.
Drying it, which is the whole maintenance routine
This is the step that decides whether your tent lasts. One listing in our roundup gives the right instruction almost in passing: wipe down the inside walls after use, leave both front and back zips open overnight, or point a fan into the opening.
That is it. A tent folded while damp will smell within a month, and once multi-layer fabric has gone that way it does not come back. Empty the reservoir too - standing water in a sealed boiler is its own problem.

The 113 F maximum is worth pausing on, because it is much lower than the 140 F figures quoted by infrared units in this roundup and that is not a defect. Steam at 113 F and 100 percent humidity is a harder environment to sit in than dry air at 140 F. Comparing the two numbers directly is the most common mistake buyers make in this category, and it is why our comparison of infrared and steam exists.
At 9.2 pounds it is the lightest full-size unit here by a clear margin, and the listing gives a real folding procedure rather than a claim of portability. If the sauna lives in a closet between sessions, weight is not a spec, it is the thing that decides whether you actually use it.

Eight hundred watts is the number that makes this interesting. It is a third less than the 1,200 W steamers that dominate the category, it draws about 6.7 amps on a 120 V circuit, and it is comfortably inside what a shared bedroom outlet will carry without an argument. For a renter running a sauna in a room that also has a television and a lamp on the same circuit, that is the whole decision.
The trade-off is honest and predictable: less steam power means a slower fill and a lower ceiling, and this listing does not publish a maximum temperature, which is the one checklist item you would most want alongside the wattage. A steam tent's temperature depends on room temperature and how well the fabric seals anyway, so a published maximum is less load-bearing here than it is on an infrared unit - but the absence still costs it a point.
This is a steam sauna, not an infrared one. Steam works on you from the outside in and gets you wet; infrared warms you more slowly and leaves you dry. Neither is better, and if you have not used both, that distinction will change your experience far more than any spec on this page.
