Cold plunge benefits: what the research actually found
The headline claims, checked against the systematic reviews they are supposed to come from, including the findings that do not support the headline.

The most useful recent study, in full
The inflammation finding, which contradicts the usual claim
Cold plunging is routinely marketed as reducing inflammation. This review found a significant increase in inflammatory markers immediately after immersion and at one hour.
That is not a scandal and it is not evidence that the practice is harmful - an acute inflammatory response to a stressor is ordinary physiology, and it says nothing about what happens over weeks. But it does mean the sentence “cold plunging reduces inflammation” is not supported by the most recent pooled evidence, and you should be suspicious of any site that repeats it without qualification.
The confusion usually comes from mixing up two different things: reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise, which meta-analyses do find fairly consistently, and reduced systemic inflammation, which this review did not find. They are different measures.
What the authors themselves flag
Reviews are more useful when you read their limitations section, and this one is unusually direct. Quoting the paper:
- “Six of the eleven studies examined the impact of single immersions, preventing conclusions on long-term effects”
- “Only one study included female participants, limiting applicability to females”
- “Small sample sizes in many included studies impact generalizability”
- Heterogeneous immersion protocols contributed to variability in the results
The second of those is worth dwelling on. A review covering 3,177 participants, 55.4 percent of them female, in which only one constituent study included women at all, is a reminder of how young this literature is.
Where the evidence is stronger
Post-exercise recovery specifically. Multiple 2025 meta-analyses find cold water immersion reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness and creatine kinase - a marker of muscle damage - compared with passive recovery. The dosing work we cite on the temperature page goes further and ranks specific temperature and duration combinations.
There is a well-established counterweight here that honest coverage should include: cold immersion immediately after resistance training appears to blunt some of the adaptive response to that training. If your goal is hypertrophy or strength, plunging straight after lifting may work against you. The timing implications are in when to cold plunge.
What nobody has demonstrated
Being explicit about the gaps is more useful than another paragraph of enthusiasm. As of this writing, the published literature does not establish that home cold plunging:
- Produces sustained metabolic changes or measurable fat loss
- Improves immune function - the 2025 review found no significant change
- Produces durable mood benefits - the same review found no significant mood difference
- Confers long-term benefits of any kind, since most trials studied a single immersion
None of that means the practice is worthless. Plenty of people find it makes them feel better, and reported sleep and stress improvements in the pooled data are real findings. It means the confident claims are running well ahead of the evidence, and you should buy equipment on the basis of wanting to do it rather than on the basis of a promised outcome.

No electrical load. This draws no power of its own. The running cost of a plunge lives in the chiller, or in the bag of ice.
Volume is the variable nobody thinks about until the first electricity bill or the third bag of ice. Chilling 84 gallons takes roughly a third less energy than chilling 129, and about 60 percent less than 216, for the same temperature drop. If you plunge alone and you are under about six foot two, the extra volume in a bigger tub is water you are paying to keep cold for no benefit.
The side drain with a three-foot hose is the other quiet advantage. Emptying a full tub by tipping it is a two-person job and a wet floor; emptying it through a hose into a drain is not.
The catch is in capitals in the listing itself: chiller compatibility requires a conversion kit sold separately. That is more honest than the listings that imply ports are included, but it is a second purchase, and you should price it before deciding this is the cheap option.
Buy it if
A solo plunger who wants the smallest volume that still covers their shoulders.
Skip it if
You are tall, you plunge with someone else, or you want chiller ports without a second purchase.

A chiller cycles. It draws its rated power while the compressor runs and almost nothing while it does not, and how often it runs depends on ambient temperature, insulation, lid use and setpoint. We do not measure duty cycle, so we publish the two figures that need no assumption and no figure in between. Computed at 18.34 cents per kWh (June 2026). The method.
The submersible pump is what makes this the bathtub answer. A chiller normally needs a tub with inlet and outlet ports; a bathtub has neither. Dropping a pump into the water and running two hoses over the rim is inelegant and it works, and it is the cheapest route to a cold plunge for anyone who cannot give up floor space for a tub at all.
Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw, comfortably mid-range here. The 79-gallon rating is a good match for a standard bathtub, which holds somewhere between 40 and 80 gallons at plunge depth.
The reusable metal mesh filter rather than disposable cartridges is a genuine running-cost detail that gets ignored because it is not electricity. Cartridge filters are a recurring purchase; a rinsable metal screen is not, and over a year that difference is larger than the difference in power draw between two chillers.

Questions people actually ask
What are the benefits of cold plunging?
A 2025 systematic review of 11 randomized controlled trials and 3,177 participants found a significant reduction in stress 12 hours after immersion, improvements in reported sleep quality and quality of life, no significant change in immunity, and a significant increase in inflammation markers immediately and one hour after immersion. Those are the findings as published, including the ones that do not fit the usual narrative.
Does cold plunging reduce inflammation?
The 2025 PLOS ONE review found the opposite in the short term: significant increases in inflammation immediately post-immersion and at one hour. Cold water immersion does reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise, which is a different measure from systemic inflammation, and conflating the two is the most common error in coverage of this topic.
Is cold plunging good for muscle recovery?
For soreness, the evidence is reasonably consistent - meta-analyses find cold water immersion reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness and creatine kinase levels after exercise. There is a separate and well-known caveat that cold immersion immediately after resistance training may blunt some adaptation, which is why timing matters.
Is cold plunging safe?
This is not medical advice and we are not qualified to give it. The known acute risk is the cold shock response - an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing on entry - which is why you enter slowly and never alone if you are new to it. Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, or who is pregnant should talk to a doctor before starting, and several product listings say so themselves.
