Cold plunge vs cryotherapy
One is water you can own. The other is a chamber you rent by the session. The physics of how each removes heat is the whole difference.

The physics, which explains everything else
The consequence for a buyer is that the temperature numbers on the two are not comparable and should never be put side by side. A chamber advertising a figure far below anything a plunge reaches is describing its medium, not the size of the stimulus you receive.
What each one actually is
The practical difference that decides it
You can own a cold plunge. You cannot own a cryotherapy chamber, and that is not a detail - it changes what the practice can be.
If you are doing this three or four times a week, a facility session is a booking, a journey and a recurring charge. A tub in your bathroom is a decision you make in the moment. Habits are made of friction, and the difference in friction here is the whole question.
The equipment side, for anyone who wants that: a tub plus a chiller runs between $6 and $40 a month in electricity depending on the unit and the run time - the figures are here - against a per-session facility charge that continues indefinitely.
The evidence positions
The cold water immersion literature is larger and more directly relevant to recovery, and it is what we cite throughout this site: a 2025 network meta-analysis on dosing that ranked specific temperature and duration combinations, and a 2025 systematic review of 11 trials and 3,177 participants on health and wellbeing outcomes.
If you have tried cryotherapy and liked it
The closest home equivalent is not colder water, it is controlled water. What a chamber gives you that a bathtub full of ice does not is a known, repeatable exposure. A chiller-held plunge gives you the same thing at home, and the temperature guide covers which bands to aim at.

Volume is the variable nobody thinks about until the first electricity bill or the third bag of ice. Chilling 84 gallons takes roughly a third less energy than chilling 129, and about 60 percent less than 216, for the same temperature drop. If you plunge alone and you are under about six foot two, the extra volume in a bigger tub is water you are paying to keep cold for no benefit.
The side drain with a three-foot hose is the other quiet advantage. Emptying a full tub by tipping it is a two-person job and a wet floor; emptying it through a hose into a drain is not.
The catch is in capitals in the listing itself: chiller compatibility requires a conversion kit sold separately. That is more honest than the listings that imply ports are included, but it is a second purchase, and you should price it before deciding this is the cheap option.
Buy it if
A solo plunger who wants the smallest volume that still covers their shoulders.
Skip it if
You are tall, you plunge with someone else, or you want chiller ports without a second purchase.

A chiller cycles. It draws its rated power while the compressor runs and almost nothing while it does not, and how often it runs depends on ambient temperature, insulation, lid use and setpoint. We do not measure duty cycle, so we publish the two figures that need no assumption and no figure in between. Computed at 18.34 cents per kWh (June 2026). The method.
The submersible pump is what makes this the bathtub answer. A chiller normally needs a tub with inlet and outlet ports; a bathtub has neither. Dropping a pump into the water and running two hoses over the rim is inelegant and it works, and it is the cheapest route to a cold plunge for anyone who cannot give up floor space for a tub at all.
Six hundred watts is eleven cents an hour at full draw, comfortably mid-range here. The 79-gallon rating is a good match for a standard bathtub, which holds somewhere between 40 and 80 gallons at plunge depth.
The reusable metal mesh filter rather than disposable cartridges is a genuine running-cost detail that gets ignored because it is not electricity. Cartridge filters are a recurring purchase; a rinsable metal screen is not, and over a year that difference is larger than the difference in power draw between two chillers.

Anyone plunging in an existing bathtub rather than buying a tub.

This is the only tub in the roundup that publishes an operating temperature range for the material itself, and it is the sort of number that separates a manufacturer from a re-brander. Minus four to 140 F tells you the walls will not go brittle if you leave the tub on a balcony through a frost, which is exactly the failure mode a renter with an outdoor plunge should worry about.
It also names the chiller ports by standard: G1/2 inch, with adapters. Most listings say 'chiller compatible' and leave you to discover the thread size after the chiller arrives. Naming the standard is what makes the claim actionable, and it is why we treat this as a tub you can start with ice and upgrade later without buying twice.
The 3.1 inch drop-stitch wall is the thickest published here. Drop-stitch is the construction used in stand-up paddleboards - thousands of threads holding two surfaces at a fixed distance, so the wall stays rigid rather than bulging - and thickness is directly what insulates. Six of eight checklist items published, and the capacity in the title matches the capacity in the spec table, which in this category is not a given.
Buy it if
Someone starting with ice who intends to add a chiller later and wants the ports specified before they buy.
Skip it if
You need a tub under about twelve square feet of floor. This is a full-length oval.
Questions people actually ask
Is cryotherapy better than a cold plunge?
They are not interchangeable. Whole-body cryotherapy exposes you to extremely cold air for two to three minutes; cold water immersion puts you in water near freezing for longer. Water conducts heat away far faster than air, so a plunge at 40 F removes heat more effectively than air at a much lower reading - which is why the two temperature numbers cannot be compared.
Why is cryotherapy so much colder than a cold plunge?
Because air is a poor conductor. Water conducts heat roughly 25 times better than air, so achieving comparable heat loss in air requires a far lower temperature and a much shorter exposure. The extreme figures quoted for cryotherapy chambers are a consequence of the medium, not evidence of a stronger stimulus.
Can you do cryotherapy at home?
Not whole-body cryotherapy. It requires a chamber and a cryogen supply, and it is a facility service you buy by the session. Cold water immersion is the version you can own, which for anyone doing this several times a week is the practical difference that decides it.
Which has more research behind it?
Cold water immersion, by a considerable margin, particularly in the sports-recovery literature. The 2025 meta-analyses on immersion dosing and on health and wellbeing outcomes both concern water immersion. That does not make cryotherapy ineffective; it means there is more to read on the water side.
