Indoors changes which specification matters

Outdoors you rank on temperature and build. Indoors you rank on three things the marketing never leads with: moisture put into a room you live in, load on a circuit you share, and floor the unit claims when you are not using it.

A unit that is excellent in a garage can be the wrong purchase for a spare bedroom, and the difference is not quality. It is that a garage tolerates humidity, has its own circuit and has floor to spare, and a bedroom has none of those.

1. Moisture: the question that splits the category in two

A steam sauna boils two to four liters of water and pipes it into a fabric tent. All of that water ends up in your room. In a ventilated space it disperses and nothing happens. In a small room in February, against a cold exterior wall, it finds the coldest surface and stays there.

Infrared units radiate onto your skin and add no moisture whatsoever. If your home has any history of condensation or damp, that is not a preference - it is the decision, and it rules out more than half this category before you compare anything else. 2. Load: what your circuit can actually carry

The figure is per circuit, not per outlet - one breaker usually feeds several sockets around a room, and everything on any of them shares the budget. 3. Floor: deployed and stored

Deployed footprints here run from about six square feet for the smallest infrared tent to about ten for a wooden cabin that does not fold at all. Six square feet is roughly one armchair. Ten square feet, permanently, is furniture.

The cabin in this roundup is 231 pounds assembled and does not fold. It ships flat and assembles without tools, which is where the portability ends. If you own the room it is a fine purchase; if you might move within a couple of years, or you rent, it is the one option here that becomes a problem later.

The specification almost nobody publishes is the folded size. Package dimensions are the workaround where a listing gives them - not identical to the folded bundle, but the right order of magnitude, and better than nothing.

Do not compare the temperatures across types

This is the most common mistake in this category and it will lead you to the wrong unit. Published maxima here are 115 F, 122 F and 140 F for steam; 140 F and 150 F for infrared. Read plainly, infrared looks hotter.

It is not that simple. Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat, and in saturated steam there is nowhere for that sweat to go, so the heat load on you at 113 F in steam is greater than at 140 F in dry air. It is the same reason a commercial steam room runs at 110 to 120 F while a Finnish sauna runs at 175 to 195 F, and nobody calls the steam room the easy option. Pick the medium first, then compare temperatures within it.

What running one costs

At 18.34 cents per kWh, a 30-minute session across this whole category costs between seven and fifteen cents. Four sessions a week is between about $1.27 and $2.54 a month.

So cost is not a reason to choose between these. We publish the per-product figures anyway - in what a portable sauna costs to run - because across eleven competitor pages read during this site’s research there were eight passing mentions of running cost and not one published figure. The point is not that the number is large. It is that it is knowable and nobody bothers.

The published specification here is close to identical to the ZONEMEL infrared unit - same wattage, same ceiling, same dimensions, same timer - which happens often in this category because a lot of these tents come off the same production lines with different fabric and different names on the box.

We are not going to pretend we can tell you which one is better built, because that would require using both and we have used neither. What we can tell you is that the published specs are the same, so if the prices differ the cheaper one is the rational buy, and if the kit contents differ the more complete kit is.

Can you put a sauna inside your house?

Yes. A portable infrared or steam unit is a plug-in appliance, not an installation - no plumbing, no permits, no wiring. The two things to check first are what else is on the circuit you plan to use, and whether a steam model's moisture is a problem in your building.

Do indoor saunas cause moisture problems?
